Tips for Negotiating Better

I do it also; I feel somehow when it comes to talking to the other person (client, customer, etc.) about money. I feel like we shouldn’t be discussing money. I feel like somebody else should help me talk to the other person about money.

How many of us feel this way when it comes to discussing money for our products or services?

Whether you are a career person or an entrepreneur, so many people yearn to negotiate better and get that amount that they ought to get for their products or services. And so, in line with that, here are some tips for you on how to negotiate in a better way:

  1. Give reasons: you need to give cogent reasons as to why you are asking for a particular amount of money for your product or for your service. These reasons need to be truthful as well as logical. It is also not enough to give reasons, you need to lay down the reasons in a logical way that the other person would understand and have empathy for you.
  2. Give facts and statistics: closely related to giving reasons is also giving facts and statistics. What are the current best practices that prompted you to charge that amount? What facts and statistics in your industry can you draw from that made you charge that amount? You need to also give this to support your stance for a particular amount you are charging.
  3. Be professional: professionalism is also important. In your conversation, actions, and so on, you need to be professional.
  4. Be nice: as you are trying to let the other person know that so and so is what you want to get for your product and service, you also need to be nice about it. Don’t put up a mean attitude just to pass our message across. You can be nice and still pass your message across in a better way.
  5. See it from the other person’s point of view: is what you are charging unrealistic for the other person? Sometimes we get to know when the other person cannot afford what we are charging. Is it possible to reduce the amount a bit, so that the other person can afford it, and it won’t reduce the quality of work you will do?
  6. Communicate key benefits: allow the other person to know what he/she stand to gain by paying a certain amount of money. You need to make sure the other person sees the need for that amount you are requesting for, and what he/she stands to benefit. In addition to this, you need to also speak their ‘language’, that is, you need to communicate in an effective way they understand.
  7. Charge reasonably: it is important to also charge a reasonable amount that will be beneficial to both parties involved.
