5 Tips on Setting up your LinkedIn Profile

Have you always wanted to set up your LinkedIn profile but you have been procrastinating on it or you don’t know how to go about it? If yes, keep reading as I give you some tips on how to set up your LinkedIn profile.

You need to know that LinkedIn is not like other social networking sites, in that it is more professional in outlook. It gives you the opportunity to present your professional image. On LinkedIn, you build connections which consist of a network of people you know professionally.

There are so many other things LinkedIn allows you to do as a professional. For instance, you get to list your skills and people endorse you on them, also, you get to list your qualifications, education, work experience, and so on.

And so, one of the things that attract people to your profile on LinkedIn is the quality of your profile. That is, how strong your profile is.

Therefore, in order to improve the quality of your profile, you need to set up your profile in a good way.

Here are some tips to setting up your LinkedIn profile:

  1. Fill out every space on your profile: LinkedIn has lots of space where you can fill in things about you, works you’ve done, and so on. And so, as much as you can, fill out every space provided for your profile. For instance, your name, current job, education, previous job, interests, publications, projects, skills, and so on. Remember that one of the ways to increase your profile strength on LinkedIn is to fill out every space available for you to fill on your profile page, in order to have a rich and strong profile.
  2. Use a professional picture: don’t use pictures that will portray you as unprofessional or not ready for work. Use a professional headshot or portrait. This also helps you to be seen as a professional.
  3. Use keywords in your job title: people might want to search for someone who does something you do. For instance, people might want to search for a writer, and you don’t fill ‘writer’ as your job title or part of your job title; then there is the possibility that your profile might not come up when there is a search for a ‘writer’. And so, one of the ways to help people quickly locate you on LinkedIn is by typing keywords that might be easier for them to use in locating you. And so, for someone who is a business analyst, his or her title should reflect that he/she is a business analyst, using the appropriate keywords someone searching for a business analyst might use in searching.
  4. Update regularly: make your profile up-to-date. Don’t just set up your profile and forget that you’ve set up your profile, update your profile regularly and reflect the right changes you need to reflect on it.
  5. Use the right words: while describing yourself or things you do or did; use the right words and express yourself clearly, you never know who is reading or looking at your profile.
