Why Taking Control of What & Who You Let Into Your Life Is So Important

“A membrane is a skin-like tissue that connects, covers, or lines cells or parts of the body” – Oxford dictionary.

Permeability is the attribute of a substance which allows liquids or gasses to pass through. Fear not, this is not a science class. But with the understanding of the above, I will like to share a story. As most people around me know, I am a Christian. And I am always on the lookout for the things I see, hear and read-  I am a very imaginative person.

As much as I would have love to claim otherwise, I am still not as consistent with reading my Bible and praying as I would want, but I try (smiles). And recently, I started praying (subconsciously) before I wake up, so I just flow in that as consciousness comes. I wake up singing too. It was a lovely season for me. I find that I was even more in tune with GOD at that time. I enjoyed it…then a CD collection of songs happened! Lovely songs. No vulgar language. No suggestive message or sexual undertone. Just nice love songs.  And I listened to the songs for about two days as I worked.

And a morning after…Instead of basking in the euphoria of worship as I wake up praying and with a worship song on my lips, I wake up with a love song in my head! It was an immeasurable loss. If you do not value Spiritual things, you won’t understand how great a loss it was.

This is just to drive home that WE are Permeable Membranes, with our physical presence the membrane to our spirit man- the MAN we really are. Our physical senses (eyes, nose, ears, mouth and even skin) is the gates of access to our spirit. What we expose ourselves to gets into us. Grains of groundnut soaked in salt water will be permeated with salt, and not with the sugar in a separate bowl by its side. Because they are exposed to salt water and not the sugar placed close.

So what do you want in your life?

Expose yourself to such. Put yourself in a position where such things will permeate you. Joy? Expose yourself to people/things/situations that will cause Joy in you. Wealth? Work hard, learn, grow, read things that will cause wealth to come. Expose yourself to such.

Also, what don’t you want in your life? Stay far from things that will allow them to permeate your life. It’s simple. GIGO! Garbage in, Garbage out. You can’t be wanting Joy and yet you surround yourself with complaining friends, all they do is complain and speak negatively. My dear, joy will be far from you o.

And for those thinking “I can choose not to be influenced by the things around me”. Really?! #yinmu for you o (sneering).

Another experience I had and can relate to this…

As a young girl, I was as moral as they come. And I was definitely difficult to influence- even now. You can hardly get me to do something I don’t want to. I knew about GOD then and I knew what was right and wrong. I personally also disdain lots of slangs and all cuss words. But I had these two friends. Guys will be guys. And they definitely don’t see what’s wrong with the ‘f’ word. And they use it. Oh, how they use it! Also with the middle finger pointing up! On this particular day, we were done with school, on the bus together. At one of the guy’s stop, they both alighted, and in the midst of jovial abuses and name calling among friends, I saw my hand come up, middle finger pointing up, and the ‘f’ word out of my mouth! I was beyond shocked! It was as though someone else had lifted my hand to do that. I couldn’t believe it was me who just did that! But really, it was me! What happened? I’d been around them. My subconscious was picking the way of life up. I was being permeated. And then I exhibited it. GIGO!

So how do we surround ourselves in this world where it seems everyone is against what you want permeating your life? After all, we are in this world. And we aren’t meant to live in seclusion – how can we influence others for GOD if we do?

So, to surround ourselves with what we desire, we just constantly stay in GOD. Stay in the spirit. Avoid books, songs, movies, Any and everything that will negate what you want in your life, that will negate what can make you grow into what you want. You may need to change friends, “un-acquaint” acquaintances, even bodily remove yourself from places where utterances against your desired growth are made.We are all membranes. We need to watch what we are permeable to! GOD Bless Us all.

We are all membranes. We need to watch what we are permeable to! GOD Bless Us all.

  • Wow! Interesting read a powerful truth. I could relate well to the analogy and was eager to see who is this excellent writer… Then Gbam! I saw aunty Tayo… I was like really?… It blesses me and I more conscious than ever that I am a permeable membrane. Thank you ma.

    • Nice one madam. God bless you. One of the worst mistakes any christian can make is to think in his head that he’s strong and that he has immunity to all these stuffs. Your write-up is simple but very instructive!
