Chiamaka Obuekwe: A Lady On A Mission To Revamp The Tourism Industry

Tell us about Chiamaka Obuekwe?

Chiamaka Obuekwe aka ‘Social Prefect’ is an adventurous, easy going, vibrant and extremely energetic young lady who is passionate about travel and tourism in Africa, especially within Nigeria. She is an International relations graduate from Covenant University. A Nigerian who loves Nigeria. She is the founder of Social Prefect. An integrated Nigerian travel brand that offers tour guide services, curated group travel, and tourism experiences. It is also online publishing and travel content creation, just to mention a few. Chiamaka loves to write, dance, travel (of course), and make friends.

How did you come up with the name Social Prefect?

Social Prefect is a nickname given to me by some colleagues at my former workplace. I have always been social and then I go out a lot and know lots of places. So, one day, one of them jokingly said, “You should be the Social Prefect of this our office because you know everyone.” And some others started calling me Social Prefect and the name stuck.

Tell us about quitting your job to be a travel entrepreneur?

Well, you cannot serve two masters at the same time. One would suffer and that is how it was for me. In fact, the two were suffering. So, I had to choose the one I had more prospect in and that is Social Prefect Tours. It has not been easy, but it has been worth it, and no 9-5 can give me the joy and fulfillment I feel every day doing what I love.

Why did you choose to be a travel entrepreneur?

Hmm! I would not really say I chose to be a travel entrepreneur. The field chose me. Let me explain. I started blogging in 2015, while still working, the only things on my mind career wise was getting a promotion and going for my masters. I started the blog out of my passion for traveling and discovering new places. It was just a platform to share my experiences and then people started asking to join and that was how the idea of organizing tours came about and then tour guide services followed suit. Basically, everything came after I started the blog.
