5 Ways To Start Your Day Right

The irony of writing this article as I woke up this morning with eye bags. I went to bed extremely late and as usual, woke up extremely early, I barely got four hours of sleep. Yet, I felt like I had so much to do and wanted to start the day in a rush. With a few approaching deadlines, I felt the urgency to hit the ground running.

Being forced to take 30 mins to an hour break from the morning rush got me thinking. This definitely wasn’t the best way to start my day. Going to bed stressed out, waking up to start the same cycle. I mean everyone has deadlines and things they plan to accomplish every day. So, there has got to be a better way.

Taking a break and not being able to do anything after I woke up totally cleared my thoughts. I mean I suddenly found out that I may have some time to write, so here I am writing a blog post after two months hiatus. I discovered I may have just put a lot of pressure on myself even when I had met the deadline I had set for a project I was working on.

I plan to start my day right from henceforth and I have come up with at least 5 ways that you and I can do that. Now that this is out there, I guess I would consistently have to adhere to it. I mean the world is watching (just kidding).

Here we go!

Start your day early: So sometimes I think of myself as a robot. Irrespective of how late I sleep, I always wind up waking up early. Especially when I think I have a lot to do. My brain just won’t let me sleep in peace. So, a fix to this would be to get a good night rest, preferably at 9 pm and wake up at 5 am (yeah right). Who goes to sleep that early?! Well, if you would like to get 8 hours of sleep and at the same time wake up by 5 am, then you need to go to bed earlier. Adjust the time to suit your schedule but try to get at least 8hours of sleep. My day was completely disrupted because I had little or no sleep. I really do not want to waste that much time trying to get my day started, so I may as well avoid insufficient sleep by fixing my weird sleeping schedule.

Start your day with God: A few years back, I never found this hard to do because I may not have had as many responsibilities as I do now. Be that as it may, I do not think responsibilities should deter us from starting our day with God. If you find yourself reaching for your phone early in the morning like I do sometimes (if not most times), don’t fret, open a devotional app instead (what a way to trick your mind!). Spend time with God. I do not get grumpy and I may not have mood swings but I notice my mood is extremely different when I start with God. Get a devotional on your phone, listen to your audio bible, and maybe read a book if you have the time.

Have a plan: I can be old school and I love to write down my plans for the day. I have discovered I accomplish more when I have a to-do-list. In the past couple of weeks, I have spent a lot of time on my laptop, so I decided to use post-it notes to create my daily to-do-lists. So, each time I am using my laptop, I am reminded of what I should be doing.

Excercise: My form of exercise so far has been to take a walk for about 10 to 15mins in the morning and in the evening. I have experienced physical strength by doing that.  I mean, this scripture says it all – 2John 2:2. You lose out on a lot of things if you are unhealthy physically. You can’t spend the day with God or achieve much if you are ill.

Eat right: I am the least qualified to talk about food and I may have to tell someone to cover that area in a subsequent blog post. Please, volunteer if you can. However, I have heard my mum talk a lot about not missing breakfast. So, get something to eat before heading out for the day. And I may have also heard this quite frequently, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”. In fact, an unhealthy diet has been linked to poor mental health.

I would consistently approach my day with these tips. Consistency is the key and I may not have been very consistent. Today I saw a reason to be consistent and intentional in starting my day the right way.

Is there something that you do that did not make it to the list? Please kindly share how you start your day. Inquiring minds want to know!
