5 Things That Should Be On Your List This Year

Life isn’t always perfect.

I love planning and having certain things mapped out but I have learned to be more accommodating to the twists and turns. I have also learned that our character is tested when things do not go as planned. I have had a lot of such moments in the previous year.

This year, I needed a friend to help make my hair, I cajoled her with every word possible. I was on the verge of bribing her. To my surprise, it fell on deaf ears. Yes, I was slightly hurt and I was almost sulking but then I started to appreciate her for saying No to me.

The next time I saw her, she apologized for not being able to make my hair. At that time I was more grateful that she had said No. I also mentioned that I was working on saying No more often especially to friends. Something she said struck me that day – “if they are your friends, they will understand“. What transpired between I and my friend got me thinking about the things I would like to start doing this year and every other year.

I decided to compile a list of things I wanted to start doing in the year 2017. They are not new year resolutions, they are just things that I need to work on or that I want to do. Each year the list is slightly different as I reflect on previous years and learn new life lessons.

So here we go…

Start Saying No

A lot of times I have taken on more than I can chew just because I did not have the nerve to say no. My schedule would be clearly jam-packed yet I will squeeze myself thin to accommodate things I should simply say no to.  If you really want a stress free year you simply should learn the act of saying No when you need to especially to friends. Like my friend said if they are really your friend they will understand. Beyond the fact that saying Yes all the time signals that you are a people pleaser, it gradually takes a toll on your emotional health.

Take a trip

This should be the last of my list. I will like to reward myself at some point in this year with a trip. I like the idea of a trip because it can be a time to relax and also rest. Forget that you have bills to pay or that things may not be going as expected and just go on a trip. Traveling can be therapeutic.

Invest in friendships – Get a Gang

Not bad gang! Have a support system. Have friends that can pray for you. Have friends that can rally around you when there is a need. This year, I decided to build strong friendships consciously and also continue to invest in old friendships.

Pick up a New Hobby

For me I chose photography. I have always loved handcrafts and I want something totally new, very creative, hence the reason I chose photography. Although, photography was chosen for specific reasons I love building my knowledge from the scratch in a new and exciting topic. It really is fun to pick up a new hobby. Learning something new can be quite exciting. As exciting as taking a trip. You never know when it will come in handy. When you feel stressed out a hobby is a great outlet. c.

Learn to appreciate the little things

I had a conversation with a friend recently and she was grateful for some things she had achieved which I had done something similar but I took it for granted. I still don’t take it seriously but I have realized that there are things that may be significant that I should appreciate. I went to a friends house and I saw a jar of things to be thankful of. You should try making a Thanksgiving jar which is also called a gratitude jar.
